Meh … to be in Collins English dictonary

17 11 2008

Always thought Meh was a very singlish colloquial.

“AT LEAST someone is excited about ‘meh’. The expression of indifference or boredom has gained a place in the Collins English Dictionary after generating a surprising amount of enthusiasm among lexicographers.

Publisher HarperCollins announced on Monday the word had been chosen from terms suggested by the public for inclusion in the dictionary’s 30th anniversary edition, to be published next year.” Straits Times

Alternative lifestyles … fish farmers

16 11 2008

Below are 2 articles from the papers today.  I remember a few years back, there was a series of articles about professionals from banking to engineers who left their job for alternative jobs like roller blading instructors, diving shop owners and chiropractor.  I was bitten by it.  A few months later i quit my full time job, took up a contract job in Bangkok.  After that i left contract work and started working with my brother in law.  Became master of my own time.  Still not exactly changing my job industry, but at least i made the move out of being an employee.

It did not last long.  Cause the income was unstable and my spending was pretty stable.  I went back to full time work.  This time, i start investing in other opportunities while still working full and part time.  So together with my bf we have a massage spa for men in manila, looking into producing independent movies (really budget one) and i still maintain the part time IT work with my brother in law that brings in some money.

But i do wonder if i am spreading myself too thin (i wished that translated to physical body).  Most entrepreneurs are very focus on their startup and it usually takes a few years for it to be successful.  And usually it comes with at least one battle story about how it almost went under.

Today’s article on men who bought a kelong and moved from sales job to being fish farmer may have been romanticized as i am sure they put in lots of hard work and effort into it.  But it is still mark by some characteristics of entrepreneurs:

  1. Focus.  Cant really do it part time if it is a startup and something new.
  2. Passion.  You need to love the work.  Cause that is what drives you through the hard time.
  3. Stamina.  It is a long run.  Results dont come in a few months.
  4. Determination.  When the going gets rough, the tough gets going.

From sales to sails

By day, they used to sell cars from the cool comfort of a showroom near the city.

When evening fell, former colleagues Dennis Tan, 35, Iskandar Muhammad, 33, and Edison Neo, 36, would swop their shirts and ties for tatty T-shirts and head to their floating fish farm off Pasir Ris.

Pain is part and parcel of life

16 11 2008

There is this article in the papers today about this rock climber and how pain is part and parcel of his life.  Isnt pain part of everyone’s life.  May be to different extend at times.  Some physical and some mental (and some sexual).  Ability to endure and handle it is also a good indicator of one’s success in life.

32, Relationship manager/ Singapore Sports Council

Height: 1.85m.

Weight: 82kg

Exercise regimen: I hit the gym thrice weekly for strength conditioning on my chest, legs and shoulders. In addition, I run twice and swim once for my cardiovascular workout, with each session lasting about 45 minutes. This helps to keep my body fat in check. It also helps that I am working in an organisation that encourages sporting lifestyles. For those who find it hard to keep fit, my advice is to find a sport you enjoy and play it well.

Diet: I eat whenever I feel like it and don’t usually keep track of my meals. I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I love to snack at night. The key is to eat everything in moderation.

Bone marrow can curb HIV ???

13 11 2008

BERLIN - DOCTORS at a Berlin hospital said on Wednesday that they appear to have rolled back the Aids virus in a patient by using bone marrow keyed to a genetic shield against HIV, but stressed it was an unusual case that needed further investigation.’This is an interesting case for research,’ said Professor Rodolf Tauber of the Charite university clinic, where the work was carried out.

‘But to promise to millions of people infected with HIV that there is hope of a cure would not be right,’ he said in a statement.

The patient, an American living in the German capital now 42 years old, came to the clinic three years ago suffering from leukaemia, for which he was given chemotherapy and other treatment. He had also been HIV-positive for a decade.

T-cells are derived from bone marrow.

Acting on a hunch, doctors replenished his bone marrow after the treatment by using marrow from a donor carrying a specific genetic variant known to confer some protection against HIV.

This mutation, already identified in previous research, occurs in one to three percent of the European population.

Known as Delta 32, it occurs in a gene called CCR5, on Chromosome 3.

It reduces the number of docking points, called CCR5, on the surface of so-called T immune cells targeted by the virus, thus lowering the risk of cell penetration by the pathogen.

The bone marrow donor had a double copy of the Delta variant in his genome, meaning he had inherited a copy from both his mother and his father, rather than from just one parent.

The patient was told to stop taking his HIV medication during the process, a move that would normally cause levels of HIV to rise sharply within short time.

‘Today, more than 20 months after the successful transplant there is no sign of HIV in the patient,’ the statement said.

But the case should not lead to ‘false hopes’, Dr Gero Huetter, one of the members of the medical team, stressed at a news conference on Wednesday.

‘This process is not adapted for the treatment of patients with HIV, neither today nor in the near future,’ Dr Huetter said.

Aids first came to public notice in 1981, when alert US doctors noted an unusual cluster of deaths among young homosexuals in California and New York.

It has since killed at least 25 million people, and 33 million others are living with the disease or HIV, according to the best estimates.

Previous research involving HIV drugs has shown that when HIV is reduced to below detectable levels, the virus holes up in refuges in the body, such as in dormant memory T cells in lymph nodes. It rebounds when treatment is stopped.

The Berlin case has not yet been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. — AFP

weekend is coming …

13 11 2008

has been a rather bad work week.  finally looking forward to weekend.  have gained back my body fat since my manila trip.  so lost my bet with my torturer.  has been unwell on and off and didn’t exercise for over a week.  yesterday went back to the torture sessions and now my body is aching … but a smile on my face.

feel less stress over work too … although in reality i guess nothing very much has changed work wise.  so exercise does helps get rid of negative energy and make a person more positive.

fighting to stay sane and healthy fit

12 11 2008

keeping the mind and body healthy is important. unfortunately i seem to be always at the verge of being sick. mentally not too strong too.  work has been a bigger bitch than me lately.  sometimes i feel beaten … and not in the enjoyable SM way.

but am already 35 and if i dont learn to cherish and live my life fruitfully everyday, am afraid i will lose more of my opportunities to enjoy life.  like how i lost my youth and golden 20s.

mid 30s should be fun too.  time when i am suppose to be at prime of my life. with good earning power and still some energy to enjoy.

shall not let work beat me.

procrastinating

3 11 2008

Got my new macbook.  Have it all setup but am still procrastinating.  Am in manila now.  Lots of work to be done so cant really just go out and spend all day with my bf.  But is still nice to be around.

My personal torturer has made a bet with me.  If i return to Singapore with more % body fat i have to buy him lunch.  If it goes down he will buy me lunch.  I guess since he is kind of masculine cool … either way is win win for me. :)

Still i hope to put in some effort and to get some abs by early next year before summery.

joke of the day … happy halloween

31 10 2008

A cabbie picks up a Nun.

She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won’t stop staring at her.

She asks him why he is staring.

He replies, ’I have a question to ask you but I don’t want to offend you.’

She answers, ’My son, you cannot offend me. When you’re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I’m sure that there’s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.’

Well, I’ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.’

She responds, ’Well, let’s see what we can do about that, #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic.’

The cab driver is very excited and says, ’Yes, I’m single and Catholic!’

OK’  the nun says. ’Pull into the next alley.’

The nun fulfills his fantasy, with a kiss that would make a hooker blush, but when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying.

My dear child,’ says the nun, ’why are you crying?’

Forgive me but I’ve sinned.  I lied and I must confess, I’m married and I’m Jewish.’

The nun says, ’That’s OK.  My name is Kevin and I’m going to a Halloween party.’
